Behind the Scenes of a Studio Photoshoot

Image
Earlier on in my blog, I talked about everything that goes on behind the scenes for sports photographers. This time, I'm going to talk about what goes on behind the scenes for studio work. This blog post will definitely tie into my Photoshop Ethics blog post so be sure to check it out if you haven't already. When looking at studio work for face value, it is pretty crazy. You are using a bunch of lights, in my case two, to create artificial light to make it look like you didn't create any light. Studio lights are meant to emulate what the human eye sees and add some emphasis to it. With all of this being said, a studio is not always the simplest thing to set up. In my personal work, I always set up my studio in my garage. This means that I have to sweep the area very well, lay down paper and have a "clean" area. What this means is that the only person allowed on the backdrop with shoes on is the subject. This means that when setting up I am constantly changing my

What I Have Learned as a Dog Photographer

Image
As a professional dog photographer, there are a ton of things that I have learned that I never expected to be important. In this blog post, I'll talk about how you can capture some cute photos of your slobbery companion at home and some of the things that our furry friends have taught me! Since my blog post about taking cute photos with your significant other was pretty successful, I thought that it would be a good idea to discuss how you can take some cute photos of your pup at home. First things first, your dog should always remain on a leash unless you are in a fenced in area. I'll even talk about how you can hide the leash in plain sight without the need for Photoshop. Getting right into it, make sure that you have A TON of treats with you. This will help you get your dogs attention. You can also bring toys or sticks if your dog likes those. I also use peanut butter on their nose to create some adorable photos with their tongues out. If you are feeling bold, you can also b

Advice from a Photographer: How to Take Cute Photos with Your Partner

Image
Picture this: you're in a beautiful location, maybe a romantic beach at sunset or a cute lookout spot on a hike. You want to preserve the memory with your partner but there's no one around to take the photo. You settle for a timer photo but it always seems like one of you blinked. We've all been there but I have some simple solutions to fix this common issue. Read on for some advice from a professional photographer on how to take Instagram-worthy photos with your S/O. Setting Up Your Photo Prop up your Phone Find a waist-height (or even a little higher if one of you is tall) spot to prop up your phone. This could be on some rocks or even on a little pedestal that you built out of surrounding objects. You do not want your camera too low since this will create a "superhero" feel, which you can read more about here . A low angle might be good for sunset photos but not many other instances. You also do not want your camera too high for a variety of reasons. When your

Controversial Photography Topics

Image
Surprisingly, photography is a career path that is full of controversial topics. Since my last blog talked about the ethics of Photoshop, I thought it would be a good idea to explore some of the other controversies in photography. I did some research and found an article by photographytalk.com, which you can find here , that discusses what they think are the most controversial topics. I also found an article by digital-photography-school.com, which you can find here , which talks about some of the same controversial topics from another angle. In this blog post, I'll discuss these topics from both points of view, give my opinion and talk about a survey that I conducted about these questions. Should you ask permission before you take a photo of someone in a photojournalistic setting and do you need a model release? Yes , you should have to ask permission before you take someone's photo in a photojournalistic setting. The subject of the photo could be doing something that they do

The Ethics of Photoshop

Image
Hey everyone! We're here today to talk about a pretty controversial topic in the photography industry. It's something that has been debated for years by the media, consumers and photographers. It's the ethics of Photoshop. Before we get into it, I'd like to provide some background information as to how most photographers use Photoshop. Generally when people think of the ethics of Photoshop they think of major magazines slimming models to the point where they look like walking skeletons however, there is so much more to Photoshop than that. For me and most photographers, we use it to soften skin, highlight key facial features and remove acne, clothing wrinkles and miscellaneous objects from the background of my photos. As a professional photographer, I use Photoshop on almost every photo I take although clients may not even realize it. Below is an example of a photo that is unedited versus Photoshopped and a time-lapse video. (Please keep in mind that Blogger does compre

A Day in the Life of a Sports Photographer

Image
Before the Game Let's paint a picture for a moment. You’re a photographer for the Springfield Thunderbirds. You arrive to the arena six hours before the game with $5,000+ worth of camera gear, your MacBook Pro and enough coffee to fuel an entire Fortune 500 company. You get inside and immediately begin working on gameday graphics, pregame videos and promotional photos with the rest of the media team. You each focus on one task while bouncing your ideas off of each other. The team broadcaster is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. The media room looks like Wall Street right before closing. Tonight is a promotion night which means the energy in the building will be high. You have only seen the beginning of what I like to call  exciting chaos , or as most people call it  working in sports. Here are the @kfc Colonel's Keys to the Game as we take on the @AHLBruins in our annual Blast From The Past Night! #RiseUp // #SPRvsPRO pic.twitter.com/Z1d0Yh1Zdt — ThunderbirdsAHL (@ThunderbirdsA
